A love letter to Stripe metadata

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

1. I love thee flexibly

Stripe metadata is flexible, and allows you to customise your payment data to reflect the unique nuances of your business. You can tag transactions with product groups, client references or categories, or any other attribute you can think of for your customers, products or subscriptions.

This flexibility means your invoice and payment data can become an integral part of your operational workflow.

2. I love thee for enhanced reporting and insights

If you are using Stripe metadata and embedding data like customer demographics, campaign codes, or product categories against your transactions, you can unlock much more meaningful insights during your reporting.

With all of your transactions tagged your reporting is easily customised based and aligned with the metrics and attributes which matter most to your business.

3. I love thee into the future

As your business grows and evolves, you’ll likely introduce new products, subscriptions and plans. But by using metadata you can continue to group transactions without needing to make wholesales changes to your processes.

It also keeps you agile, meaning you’re not locked into rigid processes; instead, you can add or modify metadata fields to suit your changing requirements.

4. I love thee for automation

As metadata fields can include structured, predictable data, they’re perfect for creating rules that drive automation.

For example, you can:

    • Trigger follow-up emails based on metadata tags.

    • Automatically assign tasks to teams based on transaction types.

Platforms like Zapier (or SubSync) make it easy to automate processes based on your metadata, eliminating repetitive tasks and freeing up your team’s time.

5. I love thee selfishly

At least I’m being honest!

SubSync can function without metadata, but once you bring it into play, you unlock a far more powerful way of mapping data between Stripe and Xero. For example, with metadata fields, SubSync can:

    • Map payments to specific Xero accounts or products.

    • Use our advanced mapping and hierarchy for more sophisticated mapping to Xero accounts.

    • Automatically assign transactions to Xero tracking categories.

You can start loving metadata too

If you’re already using Stripe and Xero but haven’t explored metadata yet, now’s the time.

Metadata is a simple feature with endless possibilities—from better reporting to streamlined workflows.
